Cosmetology is the science of makeup. It includes keeping your body clean, cleaning your face, working with hair care and nail care products and makeup…things that can help you feel good about yourself and can help you develop positive self-esteem. Having good self-esteem helps girls to build courage, confidence and character.  Get parent permission for activities using makeup, and adult supervision would be great!

All ages complete 3 requirements (choose requirements according to age level)

  1.   Learn the proper steps of taking care of your skin on a daily basis. Do you have oily, dry or combo skin? For extra, Use a headband to pull back your hair while you are washing your face.

  2. Make or complete a crossword puzzle or word search with words that correspond to hygiene, makeup, nail care and hair care OR Find a product for each letter of the word cosmetology.  If you need help, ask a friend or family member help you solve it.

  3. Look up some cosmetic recipes on the computer or in books and make one  with the help of an adult. Examples are lip gloss, facial masks, bath salts, body mists, soaps or lotions.  Be sure to find out about allergies and how and why dyes and fragrances can cause an allergic reaction.  (Make sure you are not allergic to any ingredients)  (see recipes below)

  4. With your friends, troop or family, experiment with different hair styles. Be sure to learn about how to care for your hair and why it’s important to clean your hairbrush.

  5. Learn about careers in personal hygiene, makeup, or cosmetology. Examples:
Hairstylist,  beauty consultant, skin care specialist, nail technician, esthetician, cosmetologist, salon manager,  teacher, and make-up artist.

  6. Attend or host an event that has to do with cosmetology or a spa day/night with friends. Older participants can assist someone in painting their nails, making a cosmetology craft or accessory, have a lip gloss party, or teach them about techniques or tips.

  7.  Dentists say you should brush your teeth for 2 minutes to make sure you get every tooth clean. Pick a song that is 2 minutes long and brush your teeth to it for 3 days.

  8. Try your hand at different nail polishes like glittered nail polishes, textured nail polish, nail polish “strips”, or magnetic! For extra, practice designs on paper or on yourself.

  9. Research different types of cosmetic products and then create your own design on paper.  Name your cosmetics.  Draw, color, and write information to describe how to apply it, what colors and shades are available etc..

  10. Have a lip gloss trying party. Have everyone bring a lip gloss – the bolder, the better! – and have plenty of applicators (q-tips per color) for each girl (do NOT share these). Try each lip gloss and see which looks the best with your complexion. There are tinted, glossy, scented, and relaxing ones. Try several.

  11. Learn what the Pantone colors of the year are. Many stores follow these color choices by bringing out clothing, nail polish, eye shadow, lotions and many other products to match this pallet.  Which colors do you think will look best on you? For more information, go to pantone colors for 2022. For extra, purchase an accessory in this color, paint your nails, or design something using the color pallet.

  12. Meet with a makeup specialist to talk about makeup and what works for you.  It could be as simple as using a SPF lotion and a light lip gloss. Older participants  can learn about different products and techniques. .How should you “prep” your face for before putting on makeup?  What applicators do you use for each product? Where does it go? Some examples are blush, foundation, eye shadow, lip gloss, mascara, eyeliner, and concealer.

  13. Learn how to put on eye shadow correctly. Learn how to blend more than one eye shadow for a unique look. Practice on a piece of paper or on a friend.

  14. Learn how to properly remove make up from your face. Try a makeup remover foam, wipe, or sponge.

  15. Find out one or more “makeup trends” that are popular to use. For example, bright lip gloss or lipstick with a neutral lip or smoky eyes could be popular. Look in magazines or websites to find out! What was your favorite?

  16. Decorate a mirror or makeup bag by adding rhinestones, glitter glue, ribbon, or more decorative accents. Place in a safe place where you will remember where it is to hold all of your items. Organize your items together inside.

  17. Learn about the different kinds of make up used in the movies. How are cosmetics used differently from theater performances compared to in a scary movie?

  18. Lotions and soaps come in a variety of fragrances.  Choose three different smells from testers to try.  Which one did you like best? Did you choose it because of the name or smell? Examples:  Hawaiian Coconut, Sugared vanilla sand, refreshing cucumber,  summer peach, gingerbread cookie, moonlight jasmine,  beautiful rose, or summer citrus.  For extra,  create your own lotion or soap product name and design.

19.   Learn how to recognize the correct colors of makeup and/or clothing for your skin tone and hair color.  Take a quiz, play with swatches of fabric under your chin, or have a cosmetologist or color analyst help you decide if you look better in warm or cool               colors. For extra, design an outfit using the colors or try swatches of eye shadow on your eyes or hand to see how it will look on you.
