History of Scouting for Girls (All Ages complete 3 requirements) (choose triangle, circle or rectangle on the pull down menu)

1.  Find out about Juliette Gordon Low.  Where was she born? When and how many siblings did she have?  
Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860 in Savannah Georgia.  Her nickname was Daisy.  She was the 2nd child of six children, Eleanor, Sarah, William III, Mabel and George.

 2. When did Juliette Low start scouting for girls in USA? Where and how many were in the 1st troop?  
The first meeting was March 12,1912 and it had 18 girls.  She was 50 years old and she wanted to teach girls skills and leadership. 

3. When was the 1st cookie made for selling by scouts? What was the flavor?  Do scouts still sell that flavor?  The sale of cookies to finance troop activities began as early as 1917.  Girl Scouts baked cookies and sold them.  The first boxed cookie was a sugar cookie in 1922 and sold for 25 cents a dozen.  In 1935, they were produced by commercial bakers in the shape of a trefoil.

4. When was the 1st Thinking Day? Name one activity that is completed during thinking day.  In 1926,  Juliette Low held the first “Thinking Day”.   Feb 22nd was the chosen day, On this special day, girls around the world think of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their country by creating a booth or activity representing a country of their fellow sister.  They share these activities with each other, thus teaching others about their culture, attire, languages, and daily activities.

 5. Talk to a woman in your area who was in scouting when she was young.  What type of badges did she earn? Do they still have badges like that now?

6. Compare your badge book to an earlier released book. How is your book different? How is it the same?

7.  Look at some old uniforms. How are they different from your uniform? Why do you think they have changed?  Activity sheet in birthday kit

8.  Find three badges that have been retired (no longer exist) Why do you think they were eliminated? Choose one requirement from a retired Girl Scout badge and complete the activity.  Housekeeper, sewing, magic carpet, clerk, hostess, pen pal, good grooming, and toymaker. 9.  Design your own badge that does not exist yet. List the requirements and color the design.

10.  Learn about one of the United States postage stamps that recognize Girl Scouting in the past.  What was their original value? What do they look like? Design your own postage stamp that recognizes Girl Scouting today.

11.  Create a photo book or collage of your scouting activities and fun times.

12. Sing a song from the past. How does it compare to the songs you sing today?
